In Memoriam VA West Davidson
Aug.28,1916-Oct.20, 2009
On Tuesday of last hebdomad Virginia West Davidson of Rochester, New York perished at the age of 93. VA was a woman of religion, a woman of the church, a former frailty moderator of the UPCUSA, functioning on important commissions in the denomination, a libber and a strong ally in the move to enact Tribade, Homosexual, Bisexual and Transgender people in our Church. Her unrelenting and faithful informant will long be retrieved. Many things can and will be stated about her, but here I will indulge in episodic memory for she and her hubby Davey were too personal friends. We saw her last two ages ago on a brief visit to Rochester and although she was no more a constituent of our lives in the manner she holded once been, memories of her presence came herding in following the years of her decease. She was Moderator of the Presbytery of Genesee Vale in 1975, when my hubby, David, was named to the Downtown Presbyterian Church of Rochester, New York, where Ginny besides functioned as an senior. She was not contented with the mode in which the commission holded set about its hunt for a co-pastor in her fold, and so disputed the call to David in the Presbytery. She charged that in the nominating, questioning and naming procedure the demands for justness in the battle for equality of all individuals holded not been encountered. Equality in gender and ethnicity, and besides in sexual orientation was not much on the skyline of our denomination, but it certainly get on VA 's skyline. Officially, her challenge lost in the presbytery, but her stance instructed us a slew. David and I certainly, ne'er buried that lesson in preoccupation with justness. I, for one, lost some of the naturalness in which I holded wrapped myself until that clip.
Once gotten in Rochester and going introduced with Ginny, she went a mentor to me in opening upwards issues in the church that I holded not regarded earlierly. Finally we went friends. She and Davey presented us to the wonderments of the Adirondacks, and passed happy times there together before Davey 's decease. In the metropolis of Rochester, their house was a house of calculated selection: how it was maked and where it was constructed. For others, like David and myself, it was a house of hospitality, a house were nutrient was fixed to be basked together. It was a house where conversation go on, where music was executed and heard; a house where books were read and discourse, where words were pent; a house where counselor was given and taken and where friendships took their first provisionary stairs.
VA 's voice was voice that persistently verbalize of justness and in her work in the church she sought to take about justness. The work of justness speaking and justness seeking must be passed on, so it will keep through the contemporarieses. This is the undertaking of those of us who hold been around awhile; it is one of which VA West Davidson acquitted herself goodly. In the mid LXX the issue of ordination for all people, irrespective of sexual orientation and gender individuality, was already a important issue of justness for her. She handled patiently and kindness one much jr., like myself, who holded a more hesitating stance and therefore she forced me along to regard and reconsider. She was a woman who mouth truth, who invited all to her welcome table, and who ne'er gave au fait further the cause of justness and equality for those who were stripped of it in the community of religion.
